Corner luncheonette with the feel of a German pub, serving diner staples and local comfort food. The signature hash brown special is a neighborhood ritual – it often sells out before noon.
I like slow mornings with strong coffee and a window seat at my favorite Kiez café.
Onette sits on a corner in the Akazienkiez, a cozy spot that feels like a cross between a U.S. diner and a traditional German bar. Large windows let in plenty of light, and in good weather, there’s seating outside on the pavement. Inside, the space was designed to feel warm and established, as if it has always been there. You’ll see a thoughtful mix of materials: original listed pharmacy tiles on the walls, custom cherry wood tables, and functional stainless steel surfaces. A large mirror hangs above the bar, reflecting the room’s layout of booths, tables, and bar stools. It’s the small details – hand-crocheted white curtains and vintage mother-of-pearl lamps – that complete the nostalgic but clean look. The food is all about comfort, merging German classics with American diner-style dishes for breakfast and lunch. The whole menu is built around a few well-executed staples. The Kartoffelpuffer Special, a generous plate of hash browns with a fried egg, is the main event and tends to sell out quickly. Sandwiches are a core part of the offering, from a classic Bacon, Egg & Cheese to a German-style Crispy Fish Bun (Fischbrötchen). You’ll also find heartier plates like Bio-Leberkäse with potato salad or a simple Bratwurst. The salads, like the chicken and anchovy, are substantial, and desserts include semolina porridge (Grießbrei), Quarkbällchen (curd cheese balls), and seasonal pies. Filter coffee is supplied by Circle Coffee, and there’s also cold brew and fresh juices. Most of the week, Onette is a daytime spot for a coffee, a long brunch, or a quick lunch. But the place has a second act. From Thursday to Saturday evening, the atmosphere shifts as it becomes a neighborhood wine bar. The focus turns to a curated, changing list of wines, served alongside a simple menu of snacks. It’s a distinct change from the daytime bustle, offering a more relaxed setting to settle in for a drink.
