RARE Berlin is run by the four designers whose work fills the space, a detail that shapes the entire experience. You'll almost always find one of them behind the counter on Kopernikusstraße, ready to talk about how a piece was made or the story behind a particular textile. The collective was founded by four local immigrant designers with a shared belief in collaboration, and that hands-on, personal atmosphere is what defines the shop.
The core philosophy is sustainability, a concept made tangible in the clothing itself. About 90% of the pieces here are upcycled from discarded materials – old denim sourced from flea markets, vintage duvet covers, tablecloths, and curtains are all repurposed into new designs. This focus on repurposing means every item is essentially one-of-a-kind, a fact reflected in the store’s name. The collections cover a wide range, from the avant-garde work of Tata Christiane and the patchwork denim of Fade Out Label to more casual, everyday styles. A commitment to genderless and body-inclusive design runs through all the collections.
Beyond the racks of clothing, the space is a genuine community hub for Friedrichshain's creative scene. It functions as a platform for artists and those interested in independent fashion, with a calendar that is always changing. The collective regularly hosts workshops where you can learn to repair or customize clothing. It’s also common to find art exhibitions celebrating queer aesthetics, sample sales, or evenings with live music and DJ sets that transform the shop into a lively gathering spot.
