Light-colored wooden shelves run from floor to ceiling at Weinladen, lining the walls of this compact Friedrichshain wine shop. The space is organized primarily for retail, with a service counter for payments and recommendations, but a few tables set up out front turn the sidewalk into a casual spot for a drink. It’s a neighborhood place – a Kiezladen – that functions as both a serious importer and a low-key bar.
The selection is focused and intentional, built around handmade, organic, and biodynamic wines from European producers. France, Germany, and Austria are heavily represented, with bottles from classic appellations like Burgundy and Champagne sitting alongside a large collection of natural wines – think orange wine and PetNat. The shop directly imports most of its inventory, and the staff supplies wine lists for a handful of Berlin restaurants. You’ll also find a small assortment of German grappas and fruit brandies from the producer FAUDE.
There’s always a changing menu of wines available by the glass, meant to be enjoyed at the outdoor tables. The staff gives solid, knowledgeable advice and might offer a taste to help you decide on a bottle. A good portion of the inventory is kept chilled and ready to go, making it a reliable stop for a bottle on the way to a dinner party. They also do gift-wrapping and occasionally host tastings with the winemakers themselves.
