Cloud-like light fixtures hang from the ceiling in the lounge, a direct nod to the name Kumo – the Japanese word for cloud. This area connects directly to Bar Kumo, the dedicated cocktail bar tucked inside the larger Kumoya restaurant in LoHi. While the main dining room and sushi counter handle the dinner rush, the bar and lounge operate with their own distinct energy, channeling the boisterous feel of a modern izakaya.
Bar Kumo itself is a more intimate, narrow room with floral accents, and its focus is entirely on the drinks. The back bar is heavily stocked with Japanese whisky and a curated list of sake. Cocktails are a major draw, with a popular yuzu-based drink often being the first thing people order, though the bartenders also handle off-menu classics.
Food comes from the main Kumoya kitchen, a collaboration between chefs Corey Baker and Max Mackissock. During regular hours, the menu covers traditional sushi, sashimi, and creative small plates. After 10 p.m., the atmosphere deliberately shifts. The lights dim, a DJ or live music often starts up in the lounge, and a separate late-night menu takes over with comforting dishes like udon, Japanese curries, and even egg salad sandwiches. The layout is best for smaller groups, and even with music playing, it’s still possible to hold a conversation. One final thing to know is that a 20% service charge is automatically added to every bill to support the entire staff.
