Kuusijärvi is built around a simple Finnish ritual: a hot sauna followed by a cold plunge into a natural lake. Located in Vantaa just outside Helsinki, this public recreation area is centered on its authentic smoke saunas – the only ones of their kind in the region. These traditional saunas are housed in separate wooden structures, distinct from the daily electric saunas found inside the main building. The entire setup encourages a constant cycle of moving between the intense heat of the sauna and the refreshing chill of the water.
The lake itself has a 150-meter sandy beach with a grassy area that gets busy in the summer, but the place is used year-round. From September through May, an ice hole is cut and maintained for winter swimming, a popular local pastime that’s almost always paired with a sauna session. Surrounding the water are walking trails, outdoor gyms, and courts for volleyball and basketball.
For anyone looking to go further, a prominent, 126-meter-long steel bridge named Sudentassu – "a wolf's paw" – arches high over a road, connecting the area directly to the trails of Sipoonkorpi National Park. Back at the main building, a café-restaurant with a terrace serves a daily lunch buffet and simple grill food.
A few practical things to know: swimsuits are required in the public smoke saunas and all outdoor areas, but they are not typically worn in the gender-separated electric saunas. You can rent a towel if you need one. The smoke saunas open in the afternoon, and because their temperature isn't controlled by a thermostat, they are always hottest right when they open and gradually cool down over the evening.
