What began as a glass vitrine inside Piccadilly Circus Underground Station has evolved into a permanent presence in Bethnal Green. Founded by curator Antonia Marsh in 2018, Soft Opening originally operated as a subterranean display case where commuters viewed art in transit, separated only by a layer of glass. That experiment in public accessibility laid the groundwork for the gallery’s current space on Minerva Street.
The programming focuses heavily on emerging talent, often giving artists their first solo exhibitions in the city. You will frequently encounter work that questions traditional mediums, with a roster that has included Sin Wai Kin, Shannon Cartier Lucy, and Tenant of Culture. The curation prioritizes material experimentation, so exhibitions often feature sculpture, textiles, or installation rather than standard two-dimensional work. Marsh also uses the platform to bridge the London and New York art scenes, regularly introducing US-based artists to a UK audience. While the current location offers a more traditional viewing experience than the original tube station window, the gallery maintains a specific focus on artists who are still defining their trajectory.
