One of the first Thai restaurants in the San Fernando Valley, Anajak Thai has occupied its spot in Sherman Oaks since 1981. For decades, it was a classic neighborhood establishment run by its founder, Rick Pichetrungsi. But in 2019, his son Justin – a former art director for Disney's Imagineering department – took over the kitchen, transforming the family business into one of the city’s most celebrated culinary destinations.
The concept is a modern interpretation of traditional Thai flavors, built from re-imagined family recipes. You’ll find expertly executed staples like Pad Kee Mao and Pad See Ew alongside a now-famous Southern Thai fried chicken and inventive crudo preparations. The space itself has held onto its original character – the interior is small, loud, and often feels cramped. Outside, a few wooden tables are set up in the adjacent alleyway, which serves as the primary outdoor dining area.
This contrast between the setting and the food defines the experience. An extensive wine program is overseen by a sommelier, and special events like a weekend omakase or the popular "Thai Taco Tuesday" showcase a constant creative energy. Reservations are essential and are often booked weeks, if not months, in advance. Parking is limited to the metered spots on the street. It’s worth knowing that Thai iced tea is available off-menu, and the restaurant does not serve dessert.
