Kayak Mendocino runs guided tours out of Van Damme Beach, just south of Mendocino’s main village. Tours last around 90 minutes and follow the rocky coastline, weaving through sea caves and kelp forests carved into the base of the cliffs. Guides lead small groups through calm waters, adjusting the route based on sea conditions and tide levels.
The route offers a close look at Mendocino’s natural formations—sea stacks, narrow cave passages, and arches that open up to the Pacific. Along the way, paddlers often spot seals, sea lions, and starfish clinging to the rocks. The tours are steady-paced with frequent stops, making them manageable for beginners or those paddling with kids.
Kayaks and safety gear are provided on-site. The beach has little cell signal, so payment is taken by card at the start and tips are encouraged in cash. Guests are advised to wear water shoes or sandals, quick-dry clothing, and to expect some splash. Dry bags or waterproof cases are useful for phones and cameras.
The setup is informal but well-run. Group sizes stay small, and the guides are experienced—not just with sea conditions, but with pointing out marine life and keeping things smooth for less confident paddlers. It’s one of the few ways to access this stretch of coast from the water, especially for those without their own gear.
