Ross Ranch runs guided horseback rides along the Mendocino coast, with two routes that cover very different terrain. The ranch sits west of Highway 1, so rides begin without having to cross the road - starting in a flat pasture before heading into the forest or down toward the beach.
The forest trail winds through thick woods and quiet clearings, cutting under redwoods and across shaded gullies. The beach ride moves through pastureland before descending to the sand, offering one of the few chances to ride along the shoreline near Mendocino. Both routes move at a steady walking pace, with enough time to take in the scenery.
Horses are calm and responsive, trained to handle loose sand, steep hills, and narrow forest turns. Groups stay small, and rides are guided by staff who know the land and the horses well. Helmets are provided, and rides include a short orientation before setting out.
Booking is straightforward, with flexible times and same-day options when space allows. Directions are sent in advance, and guides often help take photos at the end of the ride.
