The Skunk Train runs through old-growth redwood forest from depots in Fort Bragg and Willits, following tracks laid more than a century ago. Trains use vintage wooden cars with wide windows, open-air gondolas, and short stops along the route for forest walks and outdoor games. Some cars include a bar for drinks during the ride.
Trips often pause at a forest clearing with picnic tables, trailheads, and casual games like Jenga and cornhole. The depot at Fort Bragg includes restrooms, a gift shop, and a small model train museum open to ticket holders.
Alongside the trains, rail bikes offer a pedal-powered option — side-by-side carts fitted with electric assist motors for climbing mild grades. Riders follow the same tracks into the redwoods, with some tours including short guided nature walks. Rail bikes accommodate families and can be fitted with small dog carts for pets.
Routes change slightly depending on the season, with occasional themed rides added around holidays. Parking is available on-site at the depot, with restaurants and shops within walking distance.
