Fookem's Fabulous started as a pandemic project in 2020, when its founder, a furloughed television producer, began selling key lime pies from a chair and a pink umbrella in his Coconut Grove driveway. The name is a direct nod to that origin story, and while the operation has since moved into a permanent storefront, that resourceful, neighborhood spirit remains. You’ll find the shop on Grand Avenue, sharing its space with a boutique called Maya Hatcha, which creates a blended atmosphere of retail and bakery.
The business is built entirely around key lime pie, specifically a recipe that balances a sharp, tart filling with a signature sea-salt Graham cracker crust. Pies come in two sizes – a full 10-inch version and a 4-inch individual portion. Beyond the classic, the menu expands into a range of tropical and creative flavors. It’s common to see options like guava, mango, and coconut alongside more inventive takes like a mojito pie with a splash of rum, pistachio, or espresso.
While the pie is the main event, the brick-and-mortar location also sells coffee, key lime slushies, and jerk chicken sandwiches. The founder, Joshua Abril, is often on-site, and the whole operation still feels very hands-on. During busy holiday periods, demand can get so high that the shop switches to a first-come, first-served system with no pre-orders. The pies have also found their way into local restaurants and a dedicated pie vending machine at the Julia & Henry's food hall downtown.
