The first thing you’ll notice about Benne is the queue. It forms right on the public footpath in Bandra West, and the restaurant often provides umbrellas to shield those waiting from the sun or rain. This is the only way in – there are no reservations and no online delivery, so everyone, whether dining in or taking away, waits in the same line.
Once inside, the process is built for efficiency. You order and pay at a self-service kiosk, and a screen displays your number when the food is ready for collection. The space is functional, with Kannada music playing to reinforce its Bangalore roots and small details like hooks under the tables for bags. Even the bill names are a nod to the city, referencing famous local personalities and places.
The menu is intentionally tight, focused on recreating a specific Bangalore street food experience. The main event is the Benne Dosa, made with white butter that gives it crispy edges and a soft, fluffy center. It comes in a few variations – Plain, Masala, or with podi spice. Beyond the dosa, you’ll find Ghee Podi Thatte Idli, a larger, flatter style of idli, alongside standard idlis and vadas. The other key offering is the filter coffee, made with a chicory blend and served hot or iced. The whole operation is designed to be a quick, in-and-out affair, a true recreation of a Bangalore breakfast spot right in Mumbai. Just be prepared to find your own parking, as it’s notoriously difficult in the area.
