Akhoi isn't a restaurant you can walk into – it’s a delivery-only kitchen in Andheri West born from actress Lin Laishram’s mission to bring the home-cooked food of her native Manipur to Mumbai. The concept grew from a personal craving for the flavors she grew up with, evolving into a professional operation focused entirely on authentic Meitei recipes. The whole idea is built on nostalgia and a commitment to getting the details right, which means sourcing key ingredients like Manipuri black rice and potent Bhoot Jolokia chili directly from the region.
The best way to understand the food is through the thalis. Each one is a complete, balanced meal that serves as a proper introduction to the cuisine. You get a portion of rice alongside Ooti – a distinct dal made from white peas – and two classic Manipuri preparations. The first is Eromba, a fiery mash of vegetables, chili, and ngari, or fermented fish. The second is Singju, a crunchy and spicy fresh salad. These thalis are built around a central, slow-cooked curry with options for pork, chicken, or fish.
Beyond the thalis, the menu has standalone curries, known as Thongba, like the pork version that gets its serious heat from those ghost peppers, or a fish curry made fragrant with hooker chives. Smaller dishes include crispy fried yellow peas called Mangan Ataoba, Bora fritters, and steamed momos served with a signature chutney. The one dessert is Chak Hao Kheer, a traditional and striking purple pudding made from Manipuri black rice.
Because this is a cloud kitchen, all orders come through platforms like Zomato and Swiggy. Akhoi also handles a lot of direct orders for catering private house parties. The food is known for its spice, and it all arrives in well-sealed, eco-friendly packaging.
