In a neighborhood defined by vegetarian Udupi canteens, Aadeshwari Biryani Center is a direct and deliberate counterpoint. Opened by the same family behind the iconic Ram Ashraya, it brings the robust, non-vegetarian flavors of Andhra and Tamil Nadu to a small space off Kings Circle in Matunga. The setup itself will feel familiar – a functional room with stainless steel tables and stools where orders are called out from a kitchen window. But the menu is a complete departure, built around the kind of spicy, regional dishes rarely found in Mumbai.
The biryani is the main event, and its authenticity comes from the use of short-grain seeraga samba rice, sourced directly from the south instead of the typical basmati. You’ll find several versions, including a fiery Guntur Chicken and a rich Naati Mutton, all served with the traditional accompaniments of salan, dalcha, and raita. Beyond biryani, the menu has other heavily researched specialties like the Aadeshwari Fried Chicken (AFC), which is marinated for 24 hours in a house spice blend, and street food classics like Mutton Dosa and minced Kottu Parotta.
Food is served on traditional banana leaves, though plates are also available. The whole operation is business-like and efficient. It opens after 12:00 PM, and the handful of seats fill up quickly, so expect to wait during peak hours and share a table once you’re in. While there are a few vegetarian dishes, like Thatte Idli, the focus is squarely on meat. A popular way to finish is with the Double Ka Meetha, a dense bread pudding.
