The name OFR stands for ‘Open, Free, and Ready,’ a concept that defines this combination bookstore and gallery in the Haut Marais. From the street, you’ll see its black-painted wooden facade, a simple front for a space that has been a rallying point for the city's creative community for decades. Inside, the shop is split into two distinct rooms. The front is a dense bookstore, with shelves packed tight and books arranged in tall stacks that cover nearly every surface. It’s a layout that encourages slow browsing and discovery.
Push past the bookshelves and you’ll find a 60-square-meter gallery space at the back. This room operates on a restless schedule, hosting a constant rotation of exhibitions for emerging artists, along with performances, concerts, and book signings. The shop’s collection mirrors this artistic focus, specializing in international books, high-end magazines, and zines covering fashion, photography, design, and architecture. You can often find rare, vintage, and hard-to-find titles mixed in with new releases. The shop also produces its own branded merchandise – the tote bags and hoodies are a common sight in the neighborhood – as well as art prints and posters from featured artists.
The whole place is designed for lingering, but there are a few practical things to know. While photos of the space are fine, there’s a strict policy against photographing the inside of the books. It’s also a well-known stop during Paris Fashion Week and gets particularly crowded on weekends. The staff can help navigate the eclectic collection, but the real experience is getting lost in the stacks.
