You have to look past the wine bar signage to find the morning coffee crowd here. Better Half operates as a daytime residency inside Bar Bibi, taking over the intimate, low-lit space long before the first glass of wine is poured. It doesn’t feel like a temporary pop-up so much as a shift change – the room fills with laptops, dogs, and neighborhood regulars while founder Joshua Kaplowitz manages the bar.
Kaplowitz, formerly of Saint Frank, treats the counter as a platform for rotating roasters, often talking customers through the specific origins of the day’s beans or the floral notes in the signature Ispahan latte. The food menu is equally intentional, steered by Luis of Bellaria Desert Studio. There is a specific ritual to ordering the avocado confit: staff will almost always pause to explain that this is not avocado toast. Instead, you get a bowl of dressed, silky avocado topped with mustard seeds and vinaigrette, served alongside distinct pieces of ciabatta for scooping.
The pastry case usually holds Thai butter cakes and donuts that look and taste homemade rather than industrially uniform. It is a quiet, serious operation that just happens to borrow its front door from the venue next on the shift.
