Set within the old gantry cranes of a former shipbuilding site, Dogpatch Paddle operates out of a renovated historic building right on the water at Crane Cove Park. This position gives it direct launch access into a protected cove, sheltered from strong currents by a series of old piers and dry docks. The water here is generally calm, making it a reliable spot for beginners, with open views of the downtown skyline and the Bay Bridge.
The main business is renting kayaks – both single and tandem – and stand-up paddleboards, with a two-hour minimum on all equipment. Guided tours head out to different parts of the bay, including a recurring Full Moon Paddle, and lessons are available for those new to the water. A common trip for regulars is to paddle over to McCovey Cove, just outside the baseball park, especially when a game is on.
Back on land, the facility has San Francisco's only waterfront sauna – a feature that can be booked on its own or after a session on the water. Inside the renovated Building 49, you'll find a small shop for check-in that also sells drinks and snacks from local businesses, like It's-It ice cream sandwiches. Changing rooms and lockers are available for storing your things while you’re out. The business also provides a place for local paddlers to store their own boards and kayaks on-site through a monthly membership. Equipment can sell out, especially on weekends, so it's always a good idea to book online in advance.
