Tucked into the ground floor of the Japan Center, sharing a building with the AMC Kabuki cinema, the entrance to Kabuki Springs & Spa is marked by a set of simple wooden doors. Once inside, the atmosphere shifts completely. The space is quiet and meditative, designed as a modern version of a traditional Japanese *sento*, or public bathhouse. Low lighting, vaulted lacquered-wood ceilings, and tile mosaics create a calm, focused environment that feels removed from the city outside.
The whole experience is built around the central communal bathing area. Here, you’ll find a large hot pool heated to 104°F, a small but bracing 55°F cold plunge pool, a dry sauna lined with cedar wood, and a wet steam room infused with herbal essences. A visit follows a simple, deliberate rhythm of moving between the intense heat of the sauna or steam room and the shock of the cold plunge. This cycle of contrast therapy is the central ritual, and most people purchase a pass for a 2.5-hour session dedicated to just the baths.
The schedule is the most important thing to know before you go. The spa has separate days for men and women – when clothing is optional – and a single co-ed day each week where swimsuits are required. Beyond the baths, a full menu of massages like Shiatsu, body scrubs, and facials are available in separate, private treatment rooms. A recognized Legacy Business, the spa has been a fixture in Japantown since 1968, originally opening as a men's-only bathhouse before expanding decades later. Complimentary citrus-infused water and hot tea are always available in the lounge area.
