Onsen SF occupies a renovated auto body shop at the corner of Hyde and Eddy, and its industrial past is still visible in the exposed brick and reclaimed materials. Inside, the space is divided into two distinct parts. The front is an intimate tearoom and restaurant, with tabletops made from old schoolhouse chalkboards and walls finished with American Clay. The restaurant serves a seasonal, Japanese-inspired tasting menu with a focus on smaller plates, complemented by a curated list of sake, tea, and shochu cocktails.
A hallway leads back to the main bathhouse facilities. The heart of the space is the ten-person communal soaking pool, built directly into what was once the mechanic's pit. Flanking the pool are a dry sauna constructed from reclaimed redwood and a steam room lined with black and white tile. The whole area sits under a frosted skylight, with a vertical garden and a row of bamboo adding to the clean, minimalist design. A five-headed, steampunk-style fixture serves as the cold plunge shower.
You can experience the bathhouse and restaurant together or book them separately. Bathing is booked online in two-hour slots, and there are designated women-only, men-only, and co-ed days – a bathing suit is required for co-ed sessions. All the necessary amenities like towels, robes, and sandals are provided.
