Pearl Spa occupies the historic Japantown building that for over a century housed the Uoki Sakai Market. The renovation took nearly two years, carefully transforming the neighborhood landmark into a modern, two-story facility dedicated to traditional Korean spa rituals. It’s an entirely women-only space, and the atmosphere is kept intentionally dark and subdued, with a strict no-talking and no-phones policy to maintain the quiet.
The whole experience is built around a specific rhythm. You’re meant to arrive up to an hour before any booked treatment to use the downstairs communal bathing area. This space has a hot jacuzzi, a cold plunge tub, a dry sauna, and a steam room. Following traditional Korean spa practice, swimsuits aren't worn here – the spa provides everything you need, from robes and towels to spa shoes.
After cycling through the tubs and saunas, you’re called for your service. The Korean-style body scrub is the main event, an intense exfoliating treatment that has been a beauty ritual for centuries and is designed to remove every last bit of dead skin. Other options include a range of massages and facials, which are often bundled with the scrub in packages.
Once the treatment is finished, the relaxation continues upstairs. Here you’ll find quiet, dimly lit rooms, including a Red Clay Room and a Himalayan Salt Room, designed for resting. The vanity and locker areas are fully stocked with Aveda hair and skincare products and Dyson hair dryers for getting ready afterward. Appointments are required and it’s best to book well in advance, though it’s sometimes worth calling directly if the website shows no availability.
