Tucked away on Cliff Drive in the Mesa neighborhood, Alcazar is a destination spot that operates far from the downtown Santa Barbara scene. It’s been here since 2000, and its unassuming exterior hides a cozy and perpetually lively dining room. Inside, the space is intimate, with a small bar, decorative paper artwork, and an open kitchen that puts the chefs on full display. The atmosphere is warm and often loud – especially on weekends – with the energy spilling out onto the small front patio.
The entire concept is built around a long menu of Spanish-inspired small plates designed for sharing. Staples like the Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Patatas Bravas are always available, sitting alongside house signatures like the “Lamburghinis” – a set of lamb sliders – and Tequila Tofu. You’ll also find a unique take on paella called the “Paellita,” a small pan of saffron rice loaded with mussels, clams, prawns, and vegan chorizo. The best approach is to come with a group and order a wide variety for the table.
Just as central is the bar program, which has its own local history. This was one of the first places in the city to champion modern craft cocktails, popularizing drinks like the mojito by insisting on fresh-squeezed juices instead of pre-made mixes. That focus continues today with a full list of inventive drinks, including a proper Spanish Gin & Tonic. A daily happy hour runs from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM and is the perfect entry point.
