Walk all the way to the end of Stearns Wharf and you’ll find the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company, a weathered little crab shack set right over the water. The building looks the part, with lobster buoys hanging from the roofline and an outdoor deck that offers wide-open views of the ocean, the coastline, and the mountains beyond. It began in 1980 as a buying station for local fishermen, and that direct-from-the-boat ethos is still the whole point.
Inside, the space is small and constantly bustling. There are no traditional tables – just counter and bar seating that wraps around the walls, putting you right in front of the open kitchen. From here, you can watch the chefs work, pulling live seafood directly from the wall of saltwater tanks that line the interior. Those tanks hold the core of the menu: year-round Rock Crab, seasonal California Spiny Lobster, and locally farmed red abalone, all cooked to order.
The menu changes with the seasons but is always focused on what’s coming out of the local water. You’ll find specialties like Ridgeback Shrimp when they’re running, along with local uni, clam chowder, and a cioppino served in a bread bowl. There are no reservations here. You put your name on a sign-in sheet at the entrance and prepare for a wait, especially during peak lunch and dinner hours. For those who don't want to wait, a small take-out window offers another option. The outdoor tables are the most sought-after spots, but it can get breezy and cool sitting directly over the Pacific. Given the tight quarters, the whole place is best suited for individuals or small groups.
