The original 1885 Victorian mansion is the heart of Casa Madrona, a hotel built directly into the Sausalito hillside with clear views over Richardson Bay. The property isn’t one single building but a collection of structures that step up the incline, connected by a network of pathways and courtyards. This multi-level layout creates a distinct separation between the historic centerpiece and the more modern additions. Accommodations are split into three styles. Inside the original mansion, eleven rooms hold onto a classic Victorian aesthetic – this is also where you’ll find the expansive, 5,000-square-foot Alexandrite Suite. Scattered up the hillside are a series of bright, nautical-themed cottages, while the contemporary rooms offer either courtyard access or direct harbor views. Many of these have private balconies with rocking chairs, and some include fireplaces. Originally built as a private residence, the building has a layered past – it served as lodging for military families during WWII and later became a haven for the area's beatnik population. Today, it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with its historic core preserved through several renovations. The property includes a 3,000-square-foot spa with its own wellness courtyard, and guests have access to complimentary e-bikes for exploring the area. On the ground level, the classic Italian restaurant Poggio Trattoria operates as a separate, well-regarded neighborhood spot. The hotel’s location is central, putting Sausalito’s shops and the ferry terminal within a short walk. One thing to know is that parking isn't on-site; it's available in a public lot just across the street for a daily fee.
