The Inn Above Tide is built on piers directly over the water, a three-story, cedar-shingled building that feels more like a ship than a hotel. Originally a 1961 apartment building on the site of a former ferry machine shop, the structure’s unique position gives it an intimate connection to the San Francisco Bay. It sits immediately adjacent to the Sausalito ferry terminal, and the entire property is designed as a private, waterfront retreat. There is no restaurant or bar on-site; the focus is entirely on the 33 rooms and suites, each with its own furnished deck hanging over the water. Inside, the design is California contemporary and understated, with large windows that frame panoramic views of the city skyline, Alcatraz, and Angel Island. The 13 different floor plans mean each space feels distinct, and many feature custom wood headboards and armoires from woodworker Aaron Crespi, along with gas fireplaces and deep soaking tubs. Binoculars are provided in every room – a practical detail for watching the seals, pelicans, and passing boats that are a constant presence. A complimentary continental breakfast with pastries from San Francisco’s Crepe and Brioche starts the day, followed by an evening wine and cheese reception featuring selections from Napa and Sonoma. You can take either in the communal Drawing Room next to the lobby, but it’s common to have them delivered directly to your room for a more private experience. Valet parking is available, and the hotel provides a fleet of complimentary bicycles for exploring Sausalito. But the direct access to the ferry makes for the easiest, car-free trips across the bay into San Francisco.
