It's not easy to reach the island of Gotland, as visitors must choose between a three hour ferry or a flight. But many are surprised by how much this island offers, from beautiful scenery to historic villages and a great dining scene.
Gotland is said to be the home of the Goth tribe, an East Germanic people who bedeviled the Roman Empire in the early Middle Ages. Some residents still speak the autochthonous language, Gutnish (not to be confused with the Swedish dialect, Gotlandic).
